Xinjiang And Uyghurs – What You’re Not Being Told

“1 million Uyghur Muslims in concentration camps!” … “Ethnic Cleansing and Cultural Genocide!” … the western media is very effective at using emotional phrases.

But what’s the real story? Let’s go beyond exaggeration, distortion and sensationalism.

First of all, the media will never show the peaceful, prosperous parts of Xinjiang:

And Western media won’t talk about the billions of dollars that China has invested in Xinjiang, modernizing the cities, building 21 airports, linking the region with bullet trains etc. Here’s a video of Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. See how prosperous it is:

The Chinese government’s efforts are reflected in the exponential GDP growth of the Xinjiang region:

Regarding the Muslim minority, there are thousands of mosques in Xinjiang, a region whose recorded history goes back more than 2000 years when the ancient Silk Road linked China to Italy and Greece. In China, there are mosques that were built in the 10th century, which demonstrates the tolerance and respect for religious rights in Chinese society.

There are about 20,000 mosques in Xinjiang. There are thousands of Imams who lead the mosques in Xinjiang.

Like a few other provinces, Xinjiang is an “autonomous” region, which means it is run by Uyghurs for the most part. For example, the current “governor” is

Shohrat Zakir, an Uyghur man who’s been in charge since 2014.

Also to remember are two nuggets of information: Xinjiang is a really vast region — it’s four times as large as California(!); and Uyghurs make up only about 40% of Xinjiang’s population. Overall, Uyghurs account for only 0.7% of China’s population. That’s about the same percentage as the Native American population in the U.S. now.

Here’s another fascinating fact:

Uyghurs were exempted from the one-child policy that China initiated in 1978. This is why the Uyghur population in Xinjiang has doubled in the last forty years. How’s that for a “genocide”?

Uyghurs (and other minorities in China) also get many preferential treatments — Chinese affirmative action — in colleges and other areas.

Now, let’s break down the facts. There are four types of Uyghur Muslims:

    Well-educated Uyghurs who are moderate/secular Muslims
    Poor and lower middle-class Uyghurs
    Nomads
    Separatists and terrorists


Moderate/Secular Uyghurs

These are middle or upper middle-class Muslims who enjoy normal lives, have good jobs, and integrate easily with the mainstream Chinese culture. There are even popular Uyghur musicians, rappers (here’s an example), TV hosts, politicians etc. in China. Here are two famous Uyghur actresses — Guli Nazha and Dilraba Dilmurat. There are also male Uyghur actors like Merxat Yalkun.

Uyghur kids from educated families go to schools, live normal lives and have a lot of fun on social media like Tik Tok (“Douyin” in China):

Politically, there are also powerful Uyghur people. One such example is

Arken Imirbaki, who has been the Vice Chairman of the National People’s Congress since 2013. More importantly he’s a member of the powerful Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

Then there is An Waer, the Uyghur man who is the Chinese ambassador to Bahrain, the Islamic country in the Middle East!


Working Class Uyghurs

There are also many working class Uyghurs who may own restaurants and gift shops or work as artists and craftsmen in touristy places. Their lives aren’t bad and most of them don’t get into trouble with the government.


Really Poor Uyghurs

Then there are really poor Uyghurs who live in slums. These are prime targets for recruitment by jihadists. Many of these Uyghur kids work on the streets and shine shoes or help their families with menial jobs like taking care of donkeys, camels etc.

When the Chinese government mandates that these children go to school, the Western media scream bloody murder. What hypocrisy! If these Uyghurs come to the US, the children will be forced to attend schools as well. Here is a school that the “evil CCP” forces the Uyghur kids to attend:

Most of these kids don’t even speak Chinese, which greatly limits their abilities to find jobs later on as adults. So when they learn Chinese in school, the western propaganda screams, “cultural genocide.” Sheer idiocy!

The BBC admits that the “communist” (gasp!) government has spent $1.2 billion in the last five years on upgrading and building new schools for children in Xinjiang. This should be applauded, not demonized!

The Chinese government has done a phenomenal job by lifting 1.85 million Uyghur Muslims out of poverty between 2014 and 2017. Of course, the western media will never talk about it.

Watch this quick video about how the Chinese government helped a rural Uyghur family in Xinjiang move into modern housing and helped everyone in the family get jobs. This is a true humanitarian approach that focuses on poverty alleviation/reduction.


Nomadic Uighurs

Then there are Uyghurs who are herders and nomads in the vast Xinjiang region.

Although it seems romantic, their lives are not compatible with modern days. Most of them are stuck in extreme poverty and their kids also grow up completely illiterate. Sometimes the Chinese government relocates tens of thousands of these people into the cities and gives them jobs, free housing, health care etc. Of course, US media will spin this as “ethnic cleansing.” (The government has helped millions of Chinese people in other areas get out of extreme poverty by similar relocation projects as well).

Many of these nomads appreciate the new life: “With central heating, gas, running water, Internet and cable TV, we no longer need to worry about things that troubled us in the past.”

Sometimes, if the parents don’t want to give up their nomadic lives, the government may move the children to boarding schools, where they get free lodging, meals and education.
Separatists and Terrorists

China didn’t try to explain the terrorist problem to the world. So, of course, western media took control of the narrative. Now CGTN has released a few documentaries, which is a good start:


History of Western Subversion

What is not mentioned in the mainstream media is that the West has been stroking separatism in Xinjiang since the 1950s! When the Chinese communists won in 1949 (by defeating the US-supported faction, which went on to establish Taiwan as the new fake China), the US started arming/funding separatists in Tibet and Xinjiang.

Intelligence documents declassified in the 1990s show how the US gave millions of dollars every year to Tibetan dissidents, including Dalai Lama. Then the US also trained Tibetan guerillas in Nepal as well as in Colorado.

As for Xinjiang separatists, the US brought in a lot of these extremists into Germany in the 1970s and helped them foment a movement for “East Turkestan.”  Currently, the so-called “World Uyghur Congress” (WUC) is funded and glorified by the US government through NGOs such as National Endowment of Democracy (NED) — which also played a major role in the Tiananmen Square clashes in 1989 (see my article). Much of the atrocity propaganda stories come merely from hearsay testimonies of WUC members. There are also horror stories about organ harvesting spread by Falun Gong members in the so-called China Tribunal.

WUC is led by a woman named Rebiya Kadeer, who used to be … the richest woman in all of China! That’s how much discrimination she faced as an Uyghur. While she’s spreading all kinds of lies now, her granddaughters back in Xinjiang made her a video that shows a modern subway/metro system and upscale malls that feature stores like Gucci and Versace.


Fake News and Atrocity Propaganda

As for the allegations, it’s worthwhile to point to a 2014 NY Times article that called the refugee/asylum process an “Industry of Lies.” It talks about how refugees from China and elsewhere were taught to make up horror stories which were, of course, impossible to verify. Later, US federal officials secretly recorded conversations of lawyers coaching their clients to lie. The article concluded that, “most asylum applications were at least partly false, from fabricated narratives of persecution to counterfeit supporting documents and invented witness testimony.” However, now that China is officially a geopolitical enemy, every allegation from anti-China separatists must be totally believed!

Another source for crazy propaganda is the social media, where people post sensational fake photos and videos that quickly go viral (revealing the average IQ of people on social media).

    For example, a video of Indonesian police beating up a thief was posted as “Chinese beating up a Muslim for reading the Quran.” And that stupid video got millions of views.

    In another case, a photo from a sex/BDSM club in Taiwan was used to claim that Uyghurs were being tortured in China.

    A viral video in 2020 claimed to show handcuffed and blindfolded Uyghurs being led by the police. It was actually an old video from another province (Guizhou) where some non-Uyghur (Han) people got caught in a massive financial fraud (pyramid scheme).

Q: CNN carried a Xinjiang-related report, citing the "personal experience" of a Uyghur woman named Mihrigul Tursun. She also talked about similar "experience" as a witness at a hearing of the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China on November 28, 2018. Recently, Rubio and other US Senators re-proposed the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act at the Congress. What is your comment?

A: Are there any CNN reporters present here today? (No)

I have also seen the report just issued by CNN. On January 18, that is last Friday, we received the questions raised by CNN via e-mail. CNN said that recently it interviewed a Uyghur woman named Mihrigul Tursun, who claimed that one of her sons died in Urumqi's Children's Hospital in 2015 and she witnessed the death of nine Uyghur women when she was detained in Urumqi's prison. CNN hopes that we can respond to that. After receiving the questions, we attach high importance to that and immediately verified relevant information with the competent authority of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. But obviously, CNN was not willing to wait for the result of the verification and it has issued relevant report last weekend.

Since you raised this question, I would like to take this opportunity to clarify the facts. According to the feedback we got from Xinjiang's competent authority which has conducted careful verification on this issue, I want to make the following clarifications.

First, the Uyghur woman named Mihrigul Tursun CNN's report mentioned used to be a resident in Qiemo County of Bazhou, Xinjiang. In August 2010, she registered for marriage with an Iranian in China. In January 2012, she registered for marriage with an Egyptian in Egypt. According to the information offered by Mihrigul herself, in April 2015, she gave birth to three children in Egypt, namely, Muezi, Ailinna and Muaizi. Muezi and Ailinna were registered for permanent residence in October 2015. In March 2018, Mihrigul's Egyptian husband told the public security bureau of Qiemo County that Mihrigul has gained Egyptian nationality. After seeking the opinion of Mihrigul and receiving her application for nullifying Chinese nationality, the public security bureau of Qiemo County deregistered the permanent residence of Mihrigul, Muezi and Ailinna on April 2. On April 22, Mihrigul and her husband left the country with Muezi and Ailinna on Egyptian passports.

Second, on April 21, 2017, Mihrigul was taken into custody by the public security bureau of Qiemo County on suspicion of inciting ethnic hatred and discrimination. During this period, she was found to have infectious disease. Out of humanitarian consideration, the public security bureau of Qiemo County terminated the compulsory measures against her on May 10, 2017. Apart from the twenty days' criminal detention, Mihrigul was totally free during her stay in China. According to relevant records, from 2010 to 2017, Mihrigul traveled between China and Egypt, UAE, Thailand and Turkey eleven times.

In a nutshell, Mihrigul has never been detained by police in Urumqi. Neither has she been jailed or received penitentiary education in any vocational education and training center. I don't know on what basis she went as far as to claim that she witnessed the death of nine women during her detention and she was detained by the police in a cell with over 50 women in the interview with CNN and at the hearing of the US Congress!

Third, according to our verification, Muezi, one of Mihrigul's sons, because of pneumonia, hydrocephalus and right-side indirect inguinal hernia, was taken by Mihrigul and her family to Urumqi's Children's Hospital for hospitalization on January 14-19, May 6-12 and November 4-8 respectively in 2016. In April 2018, Mihrigul and her husband left China with their son, Muezi on Egyptian passports.

As to the other son of Mihrigul Muaizi, he was not registered for permanent residence in China. In January 2016, Muaizi was taken by Mihrigul from China to Turkey and entrusted to the care of her husband's cousin, Samar. We are not aware of what happened after that, but Mihrigul herself must be very clear about that.

Therefore, Mihrigul's claim that one of her sons died in Urumqi's Children's Hospital and that she was not informed of the reason for the hospitalization of her son, as reported by CNN, does not tally with the facts and is a lie fabricated with ulterior motives.

This is what we learned from the competent authority of Xinjiang. These are the facts about Mihrigul. In addition, I want to stress the following two points.

First, respecting truth is the lifeline of media reports. You may still remember the scandal of Claas Relotius, a well-known journalist working for Der Spiegel at the end of last year. The sources of many of his award-winning reports on Syria were proved to be fictional. Recently, some western media's Xinjiang-related reports seem to have cited many sources with exact names, but then it proved that these people are non-existent or what they cited is not true. This report released by CNN is just the latest example in this regard. We hope that relevant media can strictly observe the professional ethics of the press, cherish their credibility and refrain from citing fake news or made-up stories.

Second, on November 28, 2018, Mihrigul talked about her so-called "experience" at a hearing of the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China in the capacity of a witness, which became an important basis for Senator Rubio and others to propose and promote the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act. The US congressmen levied unwarranted accusations on and defamed the Chinese government and China's ethnic policies based on a liar's made-up story. We can by no means accept that. We urge the relevant US congressmen to respect the basic facts, abandon ideological bias and the Cold War mentality, and stop maliciously slandering and smearing China's policies on religion and the governance of Xinjiang. As to such kind of farce, once is enough, otherwise it will further chip away at the credibility of these congressmen and the US.

Why are Theresa May and Hillary Clinton supporting sharia islam rather than helping muslims to secularize and to get out of this medieval Human Rights violation?

Can you spot the only muslim woman on this image? She works at BBC - as so dis-proportionally many muslims do - and she doesn't fast during Ramadan but rather drinks some alcohol. She says her way of life is under no threat. Klevius says that's thanks to Human Rights and "British values" - not sharia islam.

Theresa May's whitewashing of sharia courts paves the way for even more and deeper sharia, i.e. what is also called "radicalization".

Klevius question: How many "muslims" out there would agree with and follow the ex-muslim below - if they got a decent chance to do so? But instead of supporting "British" and "Western" Human Rights values, Theresa May sanctions sharia islam, which fact of course contributes to radicalization because every perverted or half perverted muslim sees it as

Moreover, it makes you better understand and appreciate the rocksolid logic behind the so called Negative Human Rights, i.e. what constitutes the basis for freedom from impositions (no matter of sex, religion etc) in the 1948 Human Rights Declaration against totalitarian ideologies.

    I grew up in Pakistani Muslim family in Germany. My family placed a lot of restrictions on me. I had to wear hijab, not allowed to date. etc. But I wanted to live my own life. I was forced to marry my cousin in Pakistan, but he always abused me physically and emotionally. He always considered me his property like women are considered in Islam. I always felt suffocated, women have no hope in Islam. They are supposed to be hell dwellers in the hereafter. So there was no hope of salvation for me and I was caught up in a oppressive system designed to control women. Finally I managed to escape and come to the US, where I married a Jewish man. Jews unlike their Muslim counterparts are civilized people and my experience with my new husband is totally opposite to what I had with my first husband. I saw your speech at Brooklyn college and was saddened to see that how you were treated there by the Muslims. You stand up for civilized American values and savages can not bear it, it’s the bitter truth for them. Devout Muslims don’t belong in America, their values are not compatible with the American society. If they want to live like savages, they should live in the Muslim countries. The only ones we should support are secular Muslims and apostates, rest should all be deported. I stand with you completely in your fight for freedom and civilized world against Islam.

Klevius comment: We can't continue pretending that secularized muslims - who have adopted a Western lifestyle through education and work, hence becoming part of Western, not islamic, culture - reflect original islam and the evil deeds of its "prophet".

Theresa May and Erdogan both want to abandon Human Rights Court and instead support sharia.

Erdogan of course dreams about being the Caliph in a neo-Ottoman "empire". But what about May? Is she dreaming about a British sharia finance "empire"?

The victims were from Kosovo and Turkey - in other words, it was islam again, precisely as Klevius wrote initially. That the openly violent part of the muslim Umma consists of many of the weakest ones (mentally disturbed, depressed, criminals, drug addicts etc.) is quite self-evident. Islam inspires these individuals to deeds they would never have done had it not been for the belief they have a moral case in defending islam or muslims - or Muhammad etc. And that "moral" is upheld by everyone who says "there's only one islam and it's a great religion".

However, that link seems only to be because he had studied mass shootings on the web.

Klevius: There seems to be two competing theories about the root cause of islamic terror: 1) "Islamophobia" or 2) islam. Klevius thinks it's "islamophobia"*  - i.e. islam's clash against Human Rights.

 * From the perspective of a totalitarian muslim the concept of "islamophobia" makes absolute sense. However, from a Human Rights equality and freedom perspective in accordance with the 1948 Human Rights Declaration, it makes no sense at all.

"Islamophobia" is an oxymoron invented by islamofascists who can't (or just don't like to) cope with Human Rights equality. "Islamophobia" hence stands for the idea that muslims should abandon racist/sexist sharia that vioöates the most basic of Human Rights.

Islam locked to the Koran and the evil deeds of the "prophet" Muhammad (starting with the slaughtering of all the Jews in Medina) will always be incompatible with basic Human Rights equality. This islam is the most widespread and the one that is supported by most of its texts and interpretations (Hadiths etc). Talking about some "other islam" then has to be clearly separated from the original of islam. Klevius has for long proposed neo-islam and neo-muslims - or why not, Human Rights islam without Human Rights violating sharia.

Haitham al-Haddad is an islamist and television presenter of Palestinian origin and sits on the boards of advisors for islamic organisations in the UK, including the Islamic Sharia Council. He is the chair and operations advisor, and a trustee, for the Muslim "Research and Development" Foundation.

He has claimed that there is a "proper" way of performing FGM, further saying "it is consensus of all the scholars that female circumcision is sunnah [proper]".

In February 2012, the Dutch parliament majority tried to prevent Haddad speaking at VU University in Amsterdam. The university subsequently cancelled the event. Haddad blamed the opposition to him on a Jewish lobby.

Haddad called for a 15,000-people march to put pressure on Newham council to permit building of a large mosque in West Ham, London Borough of Newham, which would have been three times the size of St Paul's Cathedral.

In February 2014, al-Haddad's leadership of the MRDF caused controversy after the organisation booked Legoland Windsor for a private event, which it called a "Halal Fun Day". A local UKIP councillor claimed that residents were "up in arms", and called for a demonstration, while nationalist groups Casuals United and the English Defence League also stated that they would protest.
